What EN 16781 is
EN 16781 is the European standard for children’s sleep bags for use in cots. It sets safety requirements for construction and performance of infant sleep bags sold into European markets — things parents never see on a lookbook, but that determine whether a bag is designed safely for a baby who cannot free themselves from bedding.
It is a product safety standard. It is not the same as OEKO-TEX (chemical substances) or GOTS (organic supply chain). A bag can need EN 16781 for the EU and still need separate chemical or organic documentation for a retailer.
What the standard is concerned with
Buyers and product developers typically care about these themes when EN 16781 is in scope:
- Neck opening and armhole dimensions — sized so a baby’s head cannot pass through, reducing entrapment risk.
- Fastenings — zippers, snaps and shoulder openings must hold under use and not create hazards.
- Hood / head coverage — sleep bags for young infants are generally designed without hoods that cover the head.
- Fill and thermal performance labelling — TOG or tog-equivalent information tied to room-temperature guidance.
- Flammability and small parts — related safety expectations for children’s products.
- Marking and instructions — care labels, size, TOG / temperature guidance and warnings in the buyer’s language.
Exact clause-level requirements live in the published standard and in the test laboratory’s report for a given style. Your job as a buyer is to name the standard clearly and lock geometry on an approved sample.
EN 16781 vs other market requirements
One style can need more than one paper trail. EN 16781 does not replace chemical testing for the US, and a US report does not prove EN 16781 neck-opening geometry.
How to brief a factory against EN 16781
- State the target market and “design and test to EN 16781” in the first RFQ — not after sampling.
- Provide or approve a neck-opening / armhole measurement chart by size.
- Lock fastening type (two-way zipper, shoulder snaps, under-zip guard) on the pre-production sample.
- Agree TOG target and how it will be evidenced for the finished bag, not only the shell fabric.
- Plan lab testing on the final decorated style when your buyer requires a report.
- Confirm warning and care label wording for each destination language.
What “designed to EN 16781” should mean in a quotation
Serious programs separate three claims: (1) pattern and construction follow the standard’s design logic; (2) the approved sample matches the measurements you signed off; (3) a third-party report exists for that style when the buyer requires it. Do not accept a homepage badge as a substitute for (2) and (3).
