Scope certificate: the factory’s permission slip

A GOTS Scope Certificate states that a facility has been assessed against GOTS for defined product categories and process steps. It answers: may this company manufacture in a GOTS scope?

Babywear Lab’s reviewed scope certificate is ETK-00040564-GOTS-2603 (certifier ETKO, GOTS version 7.0), license GOTS-10271, valid to 30 March 2027. Categories include babies’ apparel; the company’s processes include manufacturing and packing. Some upstream processes appear via independently certified subcontractors listed on the certificate.

Transaction certificate: the shipment’s paperwork

A Transaction Certificate (TC) is issued for a specific GOTS goods transaction. It is what many retailers and brand compliance teams require before allowing a GOTS claim on the finished product or packaging.

If you need GOTS-labelled sleeping bags, rompers or swaddles, plan TCs into the order — fabric origin, certified processors and commercial documents all have to line up.

Questions to ask any babywear supplier

  1. May I see the current scope certificate (number, categories, expiry)?
  2. Which product categories and processes are in scope for my style?
  3. Can you issue a Transaction Certificate for my shipment, and what lead time does that add?
  4. If a style uses non-organic components (elastane, zippers, fills), how is that handled under GOTS?
  5. What happens if I need organic claim + a separate children’s product safety test?

Why this matters in a real order

If your retailer or brand standard requires a GOTS claim on the hangtag or invoice, plan the TC into the commercial process — fabric origin, certified processors and shipping documents have to line up. A scope certificate alone will not satisfy that claim.

Related documentation often discussed with organic babywear programs: social compliance monitoring (for example amfori BSCI) and children’s product safety testing for the specific style. Each answers a different buyer question.
